KickStart gives a hand-up, not a hand-out, by designing and selling low cost farming tools that enable poor farmers in Africa to start profitable businesses selling their crops.
About This Cause
KickStart International is an award-winning, nonprofit social enterprise with a mission to lift millions of people in Africa out of poverty quickly, cost-effectively, and sustainably. They do this by designing and mass-marketing durable yet affordable “MoneyMaker” branded irrigation pumps. KickStart realized long ago that with affordable irrigation tools, poor smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa can go from not growing enough food to feed their families to starting a profitable business selling their surplus crops. These low-cost ($70 and $150) pumps are purchased by very poor farmers who use them to irrigate their plots, enabling them to move from rain-fed subsistence farming to year-round commercial irrigated agriculture. KickStart farmers increase their annual farming income through irrigation from $150 to $850 – almost a 500% increase. For the first time they can properly feed and educate their children, afford healthcare and plan for their futures. KickStart uses donor funds to design the pumps, establish the supply chains, demonstrate and promote the pumps, and educate farmers about the benefits and methods of irrigation. KickStart’s model for development empowers people and provides them the opportunity they deserve to create a better life for themselves and their families.
