Mission Statement
NWJP supports the efforts of low-wage, immigrant and contingent workers to defend workplace dignity and to improve their wages and working conditions with employment-related organizing, legal services, education, and advocacy.
About This Cause
NWJP was founded in 2002 to meet the needs of low-wage, immigrant and contingent workers fighting against workplace oppression, including wage theft, discrimination, retaliation and unsafe working conditions. We are unique in that we strategically and efficiently deploy all of the tools of a legal organization to support our client communities – direct legal representation; worker education, outreach, and leadership development; support for workers’ organizing efforts; improved access to employment legal help; and collaborating on strengthening workplace protections. We believe that true, long-lasting, and systemic structural changes in the workplace must come from the very communities affected by injustice for a better future for all working families. We want these communities to have the support, guidance, information, and tools they need to be able to confront the workplace issues they face, trust that laws can be made to work in their interest, and effectively use their own voices to ensure their workplaces are safe, their rights are respected and their humanity is honored. Because workers who have been historically marginalized are the change agents in NWJP’s work, they are partners in the work and their experiences and perspectives drive all of our work. Our leadership and staff come from our client communities and/or are deeply experienced in this work. We help our clients find remedies for oppression or exploitation in the workplace, which improves the economic stability of our most vulnerable communities.
