Mission Statement

Getting Out and Staying Out (GOSO) partners with young people in New York City who are justice-involved and who aim to build a path towards educational achievement, employment, and financial independence. GOSO offers a comprehensive program model that focuses on the individual’s capacities and strengths and provides goal-oriented programming and wraparound supportive social services that have proven successful since our founding.

About This Cause

GOSO has established itself as one of the most effective reentry programs in the NYC area for 16- to 24-year-olds. Fewer than 10% of GOSO participants return to jail, as compared to a national average of 45% for their age group. GOSO’s holistic, client-centered approach emphasizes meeting the most-pressing needs of our clients, what we call the “four Es” - education, employment, emotional well-being, and exposure. By providing the resources they need to further their education, gain employment, and be emotionally healthy, we are giving our participants the tools needed to avoid justice involvement and become productive members of their communities. One way that GOSO is unique among the area’s reentry and diversion programs is that all of our case workers, known as Career Managers, are licensed social workers. Their specialized training and expertise are critical to developing and managing all phases of GOSO’s continuum of care to meet our population’s unique needs. Every year GOSO provides 1,400 young people with the tools they need to further their education, secure meaningful employment, and achieve emotional well-being.
