Mission Statement

Giving children a better chance at a good life when they grow up by helping them love to read and connect with a safe, caring community adult mentor.

About This Cause

"There are many ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all." ~Jacqueline Kennedy Everybody Wins! Vermont is the largest mentoring organization in Vermont, serving 500-600 children each year. Founded in 2000, we recruit and screen adult volunteers from surrounding communities and carefully match them to read one-on-one with elementary school children. Each reading pair meets at lunchtime once a week, forming a bond of friendship and support over time while engaging in the primary activity of reading together. Research shows that reading aloud with children is the single most important activity for helping them become successful readers. Children gain more in grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension by being read to than they do by reading aloud themselves. For this reason, our goal is to help create a culture of literacy for children—long-term, this is more effective than simply tutoring children in reading. Our program has four components: • Power Lunch is the backbone of the program. Reading mentors spend about one hour a week at schools with their student partners. Each week, the pairs read, talk about books, and share literacy activities. Our programs provide children with positive role models and foster a love of reading and learning. • Literacy Night Events provide an opportunity for parents and guardians to meet their children’s mentors, learn more about the program, and create community around reading, language, and books. • Gift Books ensure that students have new books to call their own, encouraging them to choose to read for pleasure. We distribute high-quality brand-new children’s books to participating students twice each school year, chosen by the student or by the mentor for the student. • Our Summer Pen Pal Program encourages student and mentor reading pairs to write to each other through the site coordinator during summer vacations, allowing them to stay connected while schools are out of session. Everybody Wins! Vermont is modeled after the original Everybody Wins! program, which began in New York City and was founded by Arthur and Phyllis Tannenbaum in 1991. Vermont is one of several states to embrace this mentoring program, and Everybody Wins! Vermont remains the only statewide and the only rural Everybody Wins! program. Senator James Jeffords was instrumental in bringing the program to Vermont. Since its inception, Everybody Wins! Vermont has served thousands of children in schools across the state.
