Mission Statement
The Mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical choices over their lifetime by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. The Theodore Roosevelt Council was chartered in 1917. The purpose of the Boy Scouts of America--incorporated on February 8, 1910, and chartered by Congress in 1916--is to provide an educational program for children and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and to develop personal fitness.
About This Cause
The mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law. Traditional Scouting - In the BSA, Scouting is considered to be one movement with three main programs: Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Varsity Scouting. Cub Scouting, the largest program, available to youths from Kindergarten to 5th grade, is a year-round program that offers fun activities that promote character and leadership development. The program is hands-on, and parents are encouraged to play an active role in the program. Boy Scouting, the Flagship program, available to youths ages 11 to 17, uses outdoor activities such as camping, aquatics and hiking to achieve the aims of character, citizenship and personal fitness training. Service, community engagement and leadership development become increasingly important parts of the program as youth lead their own activities and work their way toward earning Scouting’s highest rank, Eagle Scout. Varsity Scouting, a sub-division of Boy Scouting available to youths ages 14 to 18, is an exciting program for older boys that offers the same ideals and principles as Boy Scouting. However, its flexibility allows community organizations to design a program that fits its own needs. Learning for Life/Exploring Programs - Seven programs are offered and designed to support schools and community based organizations in their efforts to prepare youth to successfully handle the complexities of contemporary society and to enhance self-confidence. Training Programs - These programs provide training, administrative and other support to more than 3,000 adult volunteers who deliver Scouting programs to youth. One of the keys to the success of the Scouting program is trained volunteer leadership. Proper training doesn’t happen by reading a book or attending every Scout meeting. The Theodore Roosevelt Council and it’s four districts (Iroquois, Pequott, Shelter Rock and Rough Rider), have developed outstanding and dedicated training teams to help you, as a new leader, to deliver a program and calendar that will be exciting, educational and safe.
