MUSEUM OF CHINESE IN AMERICA

NEW YORK, New York, 10013 United States

Mission Statement

A national cultural museum for the Chinese diaspora

About This Cause

Formed in 1980 as the New York Chinatown History Project, the Museum of Chinese in America began as a grassroots effort by a group of community activists and researchers to preserve local Chinatown history. As the organization grew, the mission expanded to preserve and promote the history, culture, and diverse lived experiences of the Chinese in America. Today, it is a national cultural museum dedicated to the Chinese diaspora. In 2020, it was one of 20 Black, Latinx, Asian, and Indigenous arts organizations recognized as America’s Cultural Treasures. EXHIBITIONS The Permanent Exhibition, With a Single Step: Stories in the Making of America, spans over 200 years of history, telling stories of the Chinese experience in America through original artifacts, multimedia displays, and interactive moments. It encompasses the earliest Chinese immigration, the struggles for acceptance and belonging, and the development of Chinese American contemporary identity from the 1840s to 2001. Special Exhibitions feature contemporary art, design, and history exploring the experiences and culture of Chinese in America. COLLECTIONS & RESEARCH CENTER The Collections & Research Center houses over 85,000 objects and 2,000 linear feet of archival materials—known to be the largest collection of the Chinese in America. It is being preserved and used as inspiration for our exhibitions, education, and public programming. The research center supports researchers seeking archival and scholarly resources. The Museum is engaged in making the collection available online with increasing access to catalogs containing artifacts, photos, journals, books, documents, and oral histories. EDUCATION PROGRAMS Education Programs offer dynamic learning opportunities for all visitors. Gallery programs engage visitors with primary sources from the Museum’s collection through close looking and guided discussions. Guided tours, professional learning, and curricula are designed to connect visitors with the rich history, culture, and diverse experiences of the Chinese diaspora. Walking tours transform Chinatown into an organic learning environment, showcasing its vibrant street culture and the community’s history. PUBLIC PROGRAMS General Programs actively engage multigenerational immigrants, Americans of Chinese descent, and AANHPI communities more broadly through artist talks, panel discussions, hands-on workshops, community seminars, film screenings, and literary events. Performance Programs welcome artists from AANHPI communities to create and showcase works in theater, dance, music, performance art, spoken word, and film. Through these performances, the Museum aims to celebrate the Chinese diaspora while fostering a deeper understanding of the Asian American experience.
