Mission Statement

Regina Opera’s mission is to encourage music lovers on a limited budget to attend high quality operas and concerts by offering ticket prices that are much lower than those of New York City’s major opera houses, to provide a place for young musical artists to be trained in their craft, and to introduce young audiences to opera so that they can become the audience of the future. Regina Opera Company offers the residents of New York City a year-round series of operas and concerts which entertains listeners and improves the quality of their lives. Regina Opera promotes and develops public awareness and involvement in classical, semi-classical, and popular vocal music. Regina Opera aims to transform people who have never seen a complete, live opera into the audience of the future. Regina Opera enables audience members to grow to appreciate the operatic repertoire and its ``slice of life'' emotional release, both dramatic and comic, in a friendly, non-threatening atmosphere. Regina Opera provides a training ground to nurture the talents and polish the skills of musical and stage artists and directors. Regina Opera encourages the self-expression of many local residents through membership in the opera chorus, singing roles, participation in the Concert Series, and membership in the costume and set design team. Regina Opera is an independent group, free from the control of music conservatories and vocal instructors. Regina Opera gives equal opportunity to all, judging performers only by their talent and interests.

About This Cause

Regina Opera Company, located in Sunset Park, an underserved section of Brooklyn, was founded in 1970 offers 3 series of performances each season: A) 3 fully-staged OPERAS, with a 35-piece orchestra; B) 4 - 5 SUNDAY MATINEE CONCERTS, C) Several FREE-ADMISSION operas and concerts at accessible public venues, enriching the lives of people who attend the performances. A) For each OPERA, there are four ticketed performances and one free performance, which give young singers a chance to further their musical education by performing side-by-side with more experienced singers. The OPERAS presented by Regina Opera are sung in the original language with English supertitles projected above the stage. Summaries of the operas are provided on the company’s website, mailed to customers, and included in the printed program. These operas, written by well-known composers, are attended by music lovers of all ages. Regina Opera holds auditions periodically using resumes sent to the company and through referrals by other singers. The opera roles are being filled by experienced, professional singers who are learning the role for the first time, or are keeping the role current; and by young up-and-coming singers who receive coaching in the new roles, singing side-by-side with the more experienced singers. Music and staging rehearsals are scheduled for each opera: two rehearsals a week for 8 - 10 weeks during weekday evenings and Saturday afternoons; an additional 3 or 4 rehearsals with singers and the Orchestra. Individual and group coaching sessions are scheduled and paid for by the Company as needed to assist the singers to learn the music and the correct pronunciation of the lyrics which are sung in a Italian, French or German. Singing in the original language is more useful for future professional engagements. B) Regina Opera Company's second series of performances will consist of 5 SUNDAY MATINEE CONCERTS presented in its theater in Sunset Park. These concerts are 2-hour programs of a variety of music genres and include 4 - 6 singers and a pianist, and frequently include an instrumentalist. These concerts are scheduled on 5 Sundays at 3PM throughout the Season. The Company encourages audience attendance by offering subsidized tickets. OPERA ticket prices for 2023 - 2024 will be the following: Adults - $25; Senior Citizens/College Students under 25 years old - $20; Teens - $5; Children - Free Admission. The tickets for SUNDAY MATINEE CONCERTS cost only $15; $5 for Teens, and Children are admitted free. To increase accessibility to local residents on a fixed budget, the Company offers complimentary tickets through several local Senior Citizen Centers. C) In its 3rd series of performances, 3 FREE-ADMISSION OPERAS and several FREE-ADMISSION CONCERTS are presented each season. The 3 Free-Admission OPERAS will be fully-staged performances which feature the Company’s understudies and are performed with piano accompaniment, in our Sunset Park accessible theater. The singers will be involved in music and staging rehearsals in order to be well-prepared for these performances which showcase their abilities. The performances will be well publicized and open to the public. For all operas supertitles will be projected above the stage to make the opera more accessible to audience members, many of whom may never have seen an opera previously. We hope that these people will become the audience of the future. Several Free-Admission CONCERTS will be presented in handicap-accessible venues such as indoor and outdoor arts festivals, parks, and Public Libraries which are accessible by public transit, and will encourage community members of all ages to attend and learn more about opera. These Free-Admission CONCERTS will be one-hour or longer programs of a variety of music, from opera to Broadway and will include songs in many languages accompanied by piano, and occasionally by other instrumentalists. The singers and instrumentalists for these free performances are selected from the current roster of performers and additional musical artists are selected by audition.
