Mission Statement
Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the mid-19th century, Prospect Park is Brooklyn’s flagship park, welcoming more than 10 million visits each year. Prospect Park Alliance is the non-profit organization that sustains "Brooklyn's Backyard," working in partnership with the City of New York. The Alliance was founded in 1987 to help restore the Park after a long period of deterioration and decline. Today, the Alliance provides critical staff and resources that keep the Park green and vibrant for the diverse communities that call Brooklyn home. The Alliance cares for the woodlands and natural areas, restores the Park's buildings and landscapes, creates innovative Park destinations, and provides free or low-cost volunteer, education and recreation programs. Today, Prospect Park is an international model for the care of urban parks, and one of the premier green spaces in the United States.
About This Cause
Prospect Park is 585 acres of rolling meadows, waterways and woodlands in the heart of New York’s most populous borough—and also one with the least amount of green space per resident. Prospect Park is home to Brooklyn’s only lake and last remaining forest, and is an important wildlife habitat that supports more than 250 species of birds and other fauna. Sustaining the Environment: Since its founding, Prospect Park Alliance has undertaken an extensive restoration of the Park’s natural areas, including the woodland Ravine and the Park’s historic watercourse and lake, which suffered from significant erosion and neglect. The Alliance's work to restore the Park’s woodlands over the past two decades represents a $15 million investment that has encompassed nearly 200 acres of woodlands, and the planting and ongoing care of more than 500,000 trees, plants and shrubs. The Alliance’s Landscape Management team includes ecologists who monitor the health of the Park’s aquatic and woodland areas, and arborists who evaluate the trunks, limbs and root systems of more than 30,000 trees, which represent more than 200 species. The Natural Resources Crew removes invasive plants while introducing thousands of native shrubs, flowers and trees each year, and cares for the Park's watercourse, including Brooklyn's only Lake. They strategically repair erosion on damaged hillsides and maintain trails throughout the Park. Each of these tasks is critical to preserving the Park’s natural habitats. Advancing The Park: With more than 10 million visits each year, Prospect Park Alliance works year-round to help protect and sustain its landscapes, from providing additional crews to collect litter in peak summer months, to restoring landscapes and historic structures, to creating innovative Park destinations. The Alliance’s award-winning design and landscape management teams are dedicated to preserving the original vision of Park designers Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, while evolving the Park to meet the contemporary needs. A dedicated crew of arborists, horticulturists, architects and landscape architects ensures a seamless balance between the Park’s natural and designed landscapes. Among the Alliance’s acclaimed restoration projects are the historic Prospect Park Carousel, Boathouse, Picnic House, Tennis Center, Parade Ground and the Bailey Fountain and Arch at the Park’s formal entrance, Grand Army Plaza. In 2013, the Alliance completed its greatest accomplishment to date, Lakeside. Spanning more than 26 acres and designed to honor the original Olmsted and Vaux vision, this $74 million project restored and redesigned an underutilized section of the Park for the benefit of the community. It features the Samuel J. and Ethel LeFrak Center, the Shelby White and Leon Levy Esplanade and Chaim Baier Music Island. Current projects include the restoration of the Long Meadow Ball Fields and improvements to the northeast perimeter of the Park. Engaging Communities: Prospect Park is a haven for the diverse communities that call Brooklyn home—providing opportunities for relaxation and recreation that contribute to the health and wellbeing of its residents. Through our free and low-cost education, recreation and volunteer programs, Prospect Park Alliance serves more than 460,000 people annually. The Alliance offers more than 800 education and public programs each year throughout the Park, which engage nearly 75,000 visitors. In collaboration with the National Audubon Society, the Alliance created the first urban Audubon Center in 2000, which offers programs that teach adults, youth and families about the Park’s biodiversity. In 2013, the Alliance launched Pop-Up Audubon, an innovative mobile education program that directly engages the public in areas throughout the Park through hands-on exhibits, self-guided tours and live animal demonstrations. In partnership with the Historic House Trust, the Alliance also operates Lefferts Historic House, a 200-year-old Dutch Colonial farmhouse museum. Lefferts delivers a range of programming that educates the public about life in Brooklyn’s Dutch Colonial period. Interactive exhibits and teaching gardens showcase a broad range of historic topics, such as planting seasons, farming activities, social dynamics and lawn games. Through our volunteer program, the Alliance engages more than 4,400 volunteers, including corporate, school and community groups, who provide nearly 22,500 hours of service each year. Volunteers provide a range of services that improve the Park, from horticulture activities to woodlands restoration, education programming and Park cleanups. The Alliance also organizes major volunteer initiatives, such as It's My Park Day, and new initiatives that engage youth, such as the Junior Volunteer Corps. The Alliance’s recreation programs serve more than 380,000 youth and adults each year. The new LeFrak Center at Lakeside offers year-round, free and low-cost programming for the community, including ice skating, roller skating and water play. The Parade Ground is a hub of activity for local athletes, featuring 40 acres of playing fields to accommodate basketball, soccer, baseball and football. As part of our commitment to better serving Brooklyn athletes and their families, the Alliance recently renovated the Parade Ground, and improvements are now underway at the Long Meadow Ballfields, which serve a number of leagues throughout Brooklyn. The Alliance also operates the Prospect Park Tennis Center, one of Brooklyn’s most popular facilities, which offers lessons, leagues and special programming for players of all ages.
