Mission Statement

651 ARTS’ mission is to deepen awareness of and appreciation for contemporary performing arts and culture of the African Diaspora, and to provide professional and creative opportunities for artists of African descent.

About This Cause

Founded in Brooklyn in 1988, 651 ARTS is both a presenting and arts service organization. To fulfill our mission, we present live contemporary dance, music, theater, spoken word, and multi-disciplinary performance-based art; invest in artists throughout their careers in a range of ways, including symposia, artistic mentorships, and residencies; support cultural exchange between US-based and international performing artists of African descent; and produce wraparound humanities programming and community and educational workshops to provide context for our audiences. We seek to explore the diversity of the Diaspora artistically, geographically, and in other lived experiences of Black folk—including at intersections of ethnicity, gender expression, ability, generational experience, and other identities. We assert that performing artists are uniquely positioned to illustrate on a global scale that Blackness is not monolithic. As a culturally-specific organization focused on the African Diaspora, 651 ARTS is also active in social justice and in lifelong intergenerational learning. Over the past years, for example, issues that we and our artists have actively explored and examined have included the rapid gentrification and subsequent displacement of African Diasporic communities throughout Brooklyn; the founding U.S. principles of life, liberty, and happiness and what they mean for Black Americans; and the history of Black art and protest, among many others. Many of our artists integrate dialogue and interactive workshops into their creative processes, either in addition to or instead of post-show conversations. 651 ARTS is proud of our long and distinguished history of presenting exceptional artists in all performing arts disciplines from throughout the African Diaspora whose works have invigorated the cultural life of NYC and beyond, including Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, Betty Carter, Carmen De Lavallade, Anna Deavere Smith, Nora Chipaumire, and Ronald K. Brown. We have worked with over 800 artists and ensembles from Cuba to Trinidad, Senegal to South Africa, Brooklyn to Brazil and back on more than 500 projects and presentations, and have developed and presented works in collaboration with organizations as diverse as the artists we present. We partner regularly with BAAD! Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance, Bailey’s Café in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Academy of Music, BRIC, Harlem Stage, Hi-ARTS, JACK, and Weeksville Heritage Center, among many other arts and community organizations.
