Puppetry in Practice is committed to using the arts as a lens through which students experience, learn from and appreciate the world’s rich history of ideas, cultures, and imagination. We believe the world’s great stories bridge cultures and help young people become aware of their creative selves, the contributions of others and their connections to a global community.

About This Cause

Puppetry in Practice is an independent, not-for-profit organization housed in the School of Education at Brooklyn College. PiP is committed to using the arts as a lens through which students experience, learn from and appreciate the world's rich history of ideas, cultures, and imagination. PiP uses a multiarts approach to language learning and literacy. PiP reaches nearly 25 New York City schools and 15,000 students, pre-K to high school, along with school leaders, teachers, parents and other stakeholders each year. PiP provides four- to 20-week in-school and after-school artist residencies in: PUPPETRY AND PUPPET MAKING STORYTELLING AND FOLKTALES STOP-MOTION ANIMATION FILMMAKING POP-UP BOOKS TOY THEATER AUTHOR STUDIES AND ILLUSTRATION CHINESE FOLK ART MURALS PLAYWRITING/IMMERSIVE THEATER DANCE MUSIC PiP uses the creative arts to enhance literacy, spark curiosity and imagination, and engage in cultural immersions in the countries of origin that make our city great. Our staff collaborates with the School of Education's Early Childhood Department and the Childhood, Bilingual and Special Education Department, the Early Childhood Center, and the entire Brooklyn College community through educational initiatives, festivals and special events. PiP introduces and instills an enthusiasm for the creative spirit in every individual, at any age, through various means of expression. Through the power of storytelling-using centuries-old art forms or new electronic media-Puppetry in Practice encourages exploration by partnering with schools in building communities, both internally and externally. We believe the world’s great stories bridge cultures and help young people become aware of their creative selves, the contributions of others and their connections to a global community. All PiP programs address and meet standards detailed in the NYC Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts and Common Core Standards. These programs are directly tied into NYC Department of Education initiatives.
