Mission Statement

Grounded in the belief that every child deserves access to the life-changing benefits of learning an instrument, regardless of zip code or skin color, The Noel Pointer Foundation’s mission is to connect underserved youth with professional music education and performance opportunities citywide. Despite the widely noted benefits of learning an instrument on academic achievement, cognitive ability, and even mental health, most inner-city youth have limited access as a result of cuts to school arts programs that overwhelmingly impact communities of color, and a widening racial wealth gap that severely limits disposable income available for extracurricular activities of any kind. Not surprisingly, orchestras are among the least diverse institutions in America today with under 5% of seats held by musicians of African descent. Founded to honor the memory of award winning violinist Noel Pointer, the Foundation's goal is to disrupt racial and economic disparities within the field of classical music and expand the playing field for NYC youth with a focus on cultivating musicians from communities that have been systemically under-funded and under-served.

About This Cause

The Noel Pointer Foundation is a Brooklyn-based nonprofit providing year-round professional music instruction, master classes with renowned musicians, and performance opportunities citywide for young musicians 3-18 years old citywide. Launched in 1995, our work encompasses in-school programs across some 41 Title 1 schools and day cares, and on-campus programming based in Central Brooklyn, providing music education during critical out-of-school hours. Highlights of NPF's accomplishments include: • Over 34,000 children engaged in quality music instruction since 1995; • Winner of The Brooklyn Community Foundation’s 2020 Sparks Prize honoring outstanding Brooklyn non-profits, as well as awards from Barclays, the NYC Department of Education, and Lincoln Center; • 100% of NPF seniors graduated and matriculated into college last year (in comparison with only 35% of Central Brooklyn residents boasting a college degree); NPF alumni have continued their studies at The Juilliard School, Harvard University, Yale University, Brandeis University, and Boston’s Berklee College of Music, among others; • NPF’s signature ensemble, The Noel Pointer String Players, has performed onstage at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Steinway Hall, alongside seasoned musicians and ensembles like Conductor Ray Chew, Violinist Mark O’Connor, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.
