Mission Statement
Mission: Investing in the social, educational and physical well bring of all New York City young adults in an inclusive environment through economic empowerment for a self-sustaining holistic transition into adulthood.
About This Cause
The Problem Each year, thousands of New York City young-adults transition into adulthood without a solid foundation to equip them with the invaluable tools and keen insight needed to become independent contributors to society. A loss of connectivity to vital services such as college readiness, career attainment and health and wellness programs often lead to high un and under employment, homelessness, and a disconnection from valuable economic drivers; resulting in an increased burden on the overall economy. A 2014 Young Invincibles study found that current unemployment rates for 18-34 year olds cost federal and state governments almost $8.9 billion dollars each year or about $53 per taxpayer. New York City Young Adults (ages 16-30) who are either homeless or reside in under-resourced communities are often trapped in intergenerational cycles of poverty. These cycles hinder them from gaining the skills and support needed to make a holistic transition into adulthood; often prohibiting them from becoming economically sound contributing members of society. Our Approach Due to the unmet needs of this underrepresented and under-resourced population, Unity Fellowship Breaking Ground (aka Breaking Ground) fosters an inclusive environment for individuals to transition into adulthood while providing the invaluable tools needed to increase academic achievement, employability, health, and business opportunities. Our goal is to provide tailored services that address the specific needs of young adults as they embark on their road to self-sustainability. We address the needs of our targeted populations through meaningful outcomes (accountability, performance and results) as opposed to a singular process. Our mission is not only to provide instruction on how to get a job, start a business, get into college and live a healthy life; we partner with young adults to build lasting self-sustaining pathways out of poverty and into economic prosperity. Our Solutions In order to effectively break the cycle of poverty in New York City, we provide programs that acknowledge the entirety of challenges facing NYC young adults rather than offering impersonal resources for selected hardships faced on their road to self-sustainability. Transitioning into Adulthood THROUGH 5 CORE PROGRAMS College Readiness, and Access- When equipped with solid quality education, young adults can secure high-paying, stable careers with benefits and advancement potential.
