Mission Statement

GRIOT Circle is a community-based, multigenerational organization serving LGBTQ elders of color. Our mission is to respond to and eliminate all forms of oppression, including: ageism, racism, sexism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, poverty, xenophobia, and their intersections. We achieve this by providing health, wellness, advocacy, and leadership activities to remove isolation and fear, build community, as well as honor racial and ethnic traditions.

About This Cause

GRIOT (Gay Reunion in Our Time) - meaning storyteller and keeper of oral history in West African culture, is a diverse community based service organization dedicated to advocacy and empowerment of LGBTQ elders of color. The organization is officially recognized as a nonprofit 501(c) (3) and remains the only staffed organization in the country exclusively dedicated to serving the needs of LGBTQ elders of color. GRIOT’s main objective is to counteract the damaging effects of systemic discrimination by maintaining a safe space for elders and providing programs, support and social services that affirm and empower their lives and experiences. GRIOT offers its members numerous innovative and culturally competent programs and activities throughout the year. Core psycho/educational and recreational programs include a bi-weekly wood carving class, a weekly book club, computer training programs, nutritional education, health management, tai-chi, African dance and Zumba classes and a weekly “Women’s Support Group,” among others. GRIOT also has a “Buddy 2 Buddy” peer caregiver volunteer program which helps members reduce isolation and depression and enhance social and educational opportunities. Additionally, GRIOT offers case management services on site or in the home. As part of this service, a case manager provides members assistance with benefits and entitlements, advocacy and referrals.
