Mission Statement

It is the mission of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City to provide all children of all cultural and economic backgrounds with a unique program of music education and choral performance that seeks to fulfill each child’s potential, while creating a model of artistic excellence and diversity that enriches the community.

About This Cause

Young People’s Chorus of New York City (YPC) has served over 12,000 children and has given 2,500 acclaimed performances to an audience of millions across the city, nation and globe. Praised by The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times for its “astounding virtuosity” and its “gripping” and “impressive” performances, the award-winning vocal ensemble is celebrating its 30th Anniversary in 2018. • Founded in 1988 by MacArthur Fellow Francisco J. Núñez to elevate urban children’s achievements through the power of music. • Annual operating budget of $5.2 million. • Operates in a state of the art facility located across from Lincoln Center in New York City. • Provides high-quality music education to children from every socioeconomic level. • The majority of YPC’s graduates participate for eight or more years. • Offers academic coaching and mentoring through YPC’s College Bound: A Youth Development Program. • Children learn about the college application process, essay writing, time management and financial planning with PricewaterhouseCoopers volunteers. They receive homework help and computer access in YPC’s Technology Suite. The Choristers • Comprise 2,000 children from throughout New York City. • Are ethnically diverse: 32% Hispanic, 28% Black, 21% Asian,19% White. • Graduate from high school and go on to programs of higher education 100% of the time. • Increase their SAT scores by as much as 220 points through YPC’s College Bound. • Complete college at a higher rate than the national average. • Receive up to 475 hours of academic coaching, musical instruction, workshops, rehearsals and performance time a year. Choristers are regarded as bound for college from the day they join YPC. • Obtain fine quality music instruction through YPC’s programs in 20 public schools in Harlem, Washington Heights, the Lower East Side, Chinatown, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. • Often live in areas facing economic hardship. The majority of choristers receive tuition scholarships, meals or other aid to meet their needs. Young People’s Chorus of New York City • Has won the title “Choir of the World” at the International Choral Kathaumixw in British Columbia, July 2018 – the only North American chorus to earn that title in the competitions’ 34-year history. • Was the first American chorus to win First Place in the 54-year history of the Euroradio Choral Competition in Munich, Germany. • Additional awards include: MacArthur “Genius” Award and Musical America Educator of the Year for YPC’s Founder and Artistic Director; five World Choir Olympics gold medals and 22 first place awards in international competitions; five gold medals at the Golden Gate International Competition and Festival; two Chorus America/ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming and the Chorus America Education Outreach Award. • Has released 14 CDs and commissioned over 100 works by top composers. • Gives up to 100 performances a year in such venues as Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center; performs for world leaders such as President Obama and Pope Francis.
