Mission Statement

The Ellen Hermanson Foundation ensures access to state-of-the-art breast health care for all women on the East End of Long Island and empowers those affected by cancer.

About This Cause

The Ellen Hermanson Foundation was established in 1996 to honor the memory of Ellen Hermanson and carry on the important work to which she devoted so much of her time and energy. An activist and an advocate, Ellen channeled her journalistic talents to become a forceful voice for breast cancer patients and their families. She educated her readers about the importance of early detection, the challenges of living with breast cancer, the very real but little-discussed or understood issue of pain management, and the debilitating effects of breast cancer on the entire family. The Ellen Hermanson Foundation is unique in its commitment to helping breast cancer patients and their families cope with both the physical and emotional aspects of breast cancer. No one is turned away from the Ellen Hermanson Breast Center at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital for lack of insurance or inability to pay for treatment. All psychosocial support services though Ellen’s Well are provided free of charge. Since 2021, The Foundation has partnered with local nonprofits serving the BIPOC community through our Community Partnership Program. The Foundation distributes microgrants to our Partners – The Retreat/All Against Abuse, Bridgehampton Child Care and Recreational Center (BHCCRC), Organización Latino-Americana (OLA), and Shinnecock Health Clinic – to help provide financial stability and ensure issues such as food insecurity, childcare, and transportation are not hurdles to getting essential breast health care. The Foundation also provides emergency grants to our Partner organizations for their constituents who require advanced treatment.
