Mission Statement

The agency’s mission “to assure the quality of life for persons with developmental challenges through the recognition of each person’s inherent dignity and absolute right to a life filled with learning and love” is the cornerstone for all programming.

About This Cause

Mercy Home was founded in 1862 by the Sisters of Mercy, Brooklyn, NY, as a child-caring agency providing residential services to children who were victims of the times-war, disease, poverty, etc. The Sisters of Mercy met the challenges of the day by honing in on and meeting the needs whatever they might be. For the first 100 years the agency was an orphanage, followed by transitioning to a temporary shelter for abused and abandoned children and for the past 40 years developing programs and services for children and adults with autism and other developmental challenges. Currently 80% of the children in that program are now living in community based homes, attending day habilitation programs and participating in the life of the local community. We attribute their success to our “early” interventions and the comprehensive approach that was used to assist every individual to reach their fullest potential. The agency’s mission “to assure the quality of life for persons with developmental challenges through the recognition of each person’s inherent dignity and absolute right to a life filled with learning and love” is the cornerstone for all programming.
