Mission Statement

The Civilians is dedicated to ambitious and exuberant new works that dynamically engage with the broader social and political forces that shape our lived experience. By bringing underrepresented voices and underexplored subjects to the stage, we strive to encourage empathy, enrich our understanding of the world, and move towards a more fully egalitarian society. To achieve this, we support artists’ efforts to interrogate our lived experience, question and test the stories that shape our world, and awaken new thinking and perceptions through their creations. Since our founding in 2001, we have grown to work with artists from across the theater field, including those working beyond traditional theater structures, while sustaining our core of Associate Artists, a group that evolves as we forge new relationships.

About This Cause

The Civilians’ work is bold in its theatricality, and spans a variety of forms, including plays, musicals, and community-based projects. Much of our work is rooted in the practice of “investigative theater,” meaning it is derived from in-depth research by the writer or creative team. The Civilians brings its work to audiences across the country and internationally through our New York producing season, touring, and co-productions with leading Off-Broadway and regional theaters such as The Public Theater, Vineyard Theatre, Playwrights Horizons, CTG, the Humana Festival, Children’s Theater Company, Paris’ Théâtre de la Ville, London’s Gate Theatre and Soho Theatre, and many others. Notable achievements include participation in two BAM Next Wave Festivals, being the first theater company named artist-in-residence at The Met Museum, and multiple awards and nominations from the Obies, Lucille Lortel, Drama Desk, Henry Hewes, Helen Hayes, Prague Quadrennial, Edinburgh Fringe First, and recently the naming of our show Mr Burns, a post-electric play by Anne Washburn with music by Michael Friedman as the 4th Best Play of the past 25 Years by The New York Times.
