Mission Statement

The mission of the Guyana Cultural Association of New York, Inc., a Not-For-Profit 501(c)(3) organization is to document, showcase and celebrate the multiple roots of Guyana’s cultural heritage. Through our work we preserve our cultural heritage and make it available through various channels to inspire future generations.

About This Cause

Our signature events are invaluable to the cultural life of New York, especially for the multi-generational Guyanese/Caribbean community and its networks. Since 2001, the Folk Festival season in Brooklyn is a popular summer event series for Guyanese/Caribbean and for those who wish to learn about Guyana’s multi-ethnic culture. Through our signature events: the annual Family Fun Day, Awards Ceremony, Literary Hang, the MoBraff Performing Arts Festival, Kwe Kwe Night, Video and Film Festival, Art Exhibition, the Symposium, and the "Arts in the Community" programs of the Caribbean Heritage Summer Workshop Series and the Guyana Arts & Cultural Center, we provide opportunity to document, preserve and celebrate our culture. Programs include: music, dance, performing arts and audio/video, film and classes. Our programs inspire creativity, encourage learning, support intergenerational multi ethnic dialogue, and foster multi cultural understanding. These events and programs are open to all children in Brooklyn and provide opportunities for underserved youth to improve their craft and celebrate our culture through the creative arts. GCA is committed to community partnerships and collaborations and our programs are open to all members of the community from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds interested in learning about our cultural traditions and/or developing their craft in the creative arts. Our work with other cultural and community groups such as Brooklyn Arts Council, the American Indian Community House, Braata Productions, the Gambian Jaliya Kafo Group and the Mistry Garbaa Group, has allowed us to spark change through collaborations and creative and strategic partnerships.
