Mission Statement
SACSS was created in 2000 with a mission to empower underserved South Asians to actively engage in the civic and economic life of New York. We assist individuals and families in areas of healthcare access and awareness, parent education, and senior services. We provide basic and advanced English and computer classes. All our programs focus on and assist our clients with various needs in these areas through direct services. All of SACSS’ programs are free and are provided by culturally competent staff members who speak Hindi, Bengali, Urdu, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu.
About This Cause
SACSS’ target Diaspora comprises immigrant families, including children, adults, and seniors hailing from the South Asian regions of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bhutan, and the Maldives. SACSS also serves the Indo-Caribbean community who are from the Caribbean nations who trace their heritage back to South Asia. Over the past 15 years SACSS has provided services to over 15,000 people while our outreach has been to several thousands more. These clients have been served through our services such as: (a) Health Screenings- 4300; (b) Healthcare Access and information- 7500; (c) Information Sessions to 150 Small businesses- 750; (d) Information Sessions on Medicare, Alzheimer’s, loneliness, isolation, and depression of Seniors- 1500; (e) workshops on Health, Nutrition & Communication with children to South Asian parents- 700; (f) Case management and counseling to 500 members of 100 families mandated by NYC- Administration for Children’s Services; (g) Students of basic and advanced English, and computer classes- 325; (h) Counseling, individual and group therapy for the families of direct victims of 9/11- 180. The numbers provided above are for actual clients who received services. This does not include the organization’s sphere of influence. Until the Health enrollment Project started at the end of 2013 SACSS had been consistently serving over a 1000 clients per year on an average. Since this project started we have reached and/or served over 3000 people. Health care access, awareness and advocacy have been a major focus for SACSS. SACSS was a NYC Managed Care Consumer Assistance Program (MCCAP) agency and now a Navigator for NYSOH with Community Service Society (CSS) and the only South Asian Community Health Advocate (CHA) with CSS. We have been assisting clients in resolving existing issues with health insurance, finding a doctor who speaks the client’s language, helping them understand health coverage documents, recertification of health insurance, providing translation with different agencies and providers, providing linkages and referrals to uninsured clients; helping in applying for financial assistance to reduce or get waiver for huge provider bills, referrals for enrollment of potential consumers, and presentations on Affordable Care Act and options available for the uninsured. Since 2007, SACSS has been coordinating and participating in over 40 healthcare education events per year. SACSS has been the Community Partner for Center for Immigrant Health, New York University, and Immigrant Health and Cancer Disparities, Memorial Sloan Kettering. As such we have collaborated on projects such as hypertension and cardio-vascular health among South Asians, gukta and paan usage and its effects, and health issues of New York City taxi drivers. SACSS has conducted workshops on various health and mental health topics such as health and nutrition, Alzheimer’s disease and care giving, and issues related to South Asian senior depression. We are frequently invited to speak on health issues concerning South Asian and immigrant communities.
