SCREAMFEST HORROR FILM FESTIVAL

Beverly Hills, California, 90211 United States

Mission Statement

Screamfest Horror Film Festival provides an important platform for talented writers and directors in the art of genre films to showcase their work to the residents of County of Los Angeles and entertainment professionals. Screamfest screens quality features and short films in competition at the TCL Chinese Theatre and is open to the general public.

About This Cause

Regardless of the many acclaimed horror films such as THE EXORCIST, PSYCHO, ROSEMARY'S BABY, JAWS, SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, THE OTHERS, THE RING and most recently GET OUT (99% Rotten Tomatoes rating), the horror genre still receives a negative connotation. The festival screens and promotes quality feature and short films from around the world. Screamfest champions its talented filmmakers to garner attention for their films and gives them a first-class screening setting they might not otherwise have the opportunity to screen in at a prime time slot. Many festivals only screen horror in a midnight section with only a few selected films. Screamfest curates ten full nights and weekends of genre films giving filmmakers more of an opportunity to have their films programmed and more films for the audience to see. Screamfest provides a place for genre fans in the community to come together with like-minded people. They collectively watch genre films and share in this cathartic experience with fellow audience members; they jump, scream and even laugh at times. They are in a place with their peers and are able to enjoy these films together. The organization also screens short films created by K-12 students from LAUSD, Duarte Unified, El Monte and SAUSD school districts under The Cinema Project. Day One focuses solely on elementary and middle school students and Day Two focuses strictly on teens from high schools. Following the screening of the students’ work, the students participate in directing, acting, story writing, sound, camera, special effects and reading discussion group/workshops. They learn the importance of how writing / reading translates to film. Screamfest screens a G or PG rated (school approved) international short film block from the festival for the elementary and middle school students to expose them to different cultures of storytelling and languages. A (school approved) international feature film will be screened for the high school students to experience different languages, culture and stories. A Q&A follows each screening. The students have the opportunity to ask questions and engage in conversation with the filmmakers. These screening/discussions will inspire the students to create more diverse stories and characters. The bigger theme of this program is introducing these underserved students to potential career paths in filmmaking, while teaching the importance of reading, writing and science/technology.
