Mission Statement
The founding mission of the School of American Ballet (SAB) is to develop dancers for professional careers in ballet. Today, SAB also aspires toward a broader vision: to attract, retain, and develop the best talent in ballet while enhancing the vitality of the art form.
About This Cause
The School of American Ballet (SAB) is the nation’s premier ballet academy. Choreographer George Balanchine and arts patron Lincoln Kirstein founded the School in 1934 in New York City as their first step toward creating an American ballet tradition. Today, SAB provides world -class ballet training to dancers ages 6 -19; serves as the official yet independent school of New York City Ballet; and works toward diversity, equity, and inclusion across the School and ballet field.
