Mission Statement

Women Creating Change is an inclusive community that partners with organizations and with New York City women who have been systemically excluded from civic processes to develop programs and influence policies that result in more equitable civic engagement.

About This Cause

Women Creating Change (WCC) envisions a more just and equitable New York City in which women are equipped and activated to influence policies and systems affecting their lives. While WCC has over one hundred years of experience promoting civic engagement for all women, the organization recognizes that full civic participation in New York City today requires a redirection of resources to prioritize the needs of historically marginalized women. Founded in 1915 as the Women’s City Club, WCC has been a platform for women to unite, address political and societal issues, and enact meaningful transformations. With its long standing track record of advocating for women-related legislation in New York City, WCC’s early achievements include establishing the country's first Maternity Center in 1917, advocating for the women’s admission to Columbia University's law school, improving housing conditions in impoverished neighborhoods, and public education campaigns focused on civic participation. WCC’s updated mission is to educate, equip, and empower women and girls and influence policies that advance gender equity and improve their quality of life. Committed to the vision that all women have the power to be changemakers, WCC’s team raises awareness, educates, and trains women, building on their strengths and skills to achieve community reforms. The organization helps overcome barriers to women’s civic participation through a sustainable, community-led model that relies on women to identify their priorities and equips them with resources and opportunities to advocate. To optimize impact, WCC partners with other aligned agencies on citywide campaigns. No other organization has the track record and legacy of WCC in engaging and preparing NYC women to lead on the issues that most affect them. WCC’s 3 programs impact NYC at the individual, community, and systemic levels. 1) Information and Tools for Leadership WCC hosts a Civic Matters website, which is a central hub that equips women for community-led advocacy. 2) Education and Training WCC holds educational public forums raising awareness of women’s issues and facilitates community-based workshops that offer women tools to influence policies and drive change in their communities. Workshop topics include civic matters, self-efficacy, and issue-specific priorities identified by women participants in community surveys. 3) Policy Advocacy WCC conducts research and produces whitepapers, generating data to Influence policies (e.g. WCC’s 2023 Pay Equity Report: https://tinyurl.com/WCCPayEquity). The organization also engages in advocacy, coalition-building, and campaigns to improve the civic engagement process and advance gender equity. Lastly, WCC funds fellowships for women to conduct in-depth research and advocacy focused on policy change.
