Mission Statement

Henry Street Settlement opens doors of opportunity to enrich lives and enhance human progress for Lower East Side residents and other New Yorkers through social services, arts, and health care programs.

About This Cause

Each year, Henry Street Settlement serves 50,000 individuals through social services, arts and health care programs. Henry Street’s services build on our clients’ strengths and interests, and address the needs of individuals of all ages, from babies to senior citizens. These programs are designed to focus on a range of challenges, including social isolation; lack of housing and food; unemployment; lack of healthcare; undertreated and untreated medical and psychological disorders; poor educational achievement; and insufficient access to affordable arts experiences and creative expression. Our programs are offered across four key areas: Health and Wellness: This division provides community members, including senior citizens and individuals dealing with major health concerns, access to comprehensive and affordable care that supports their physical and mental health and overall well-being. The Neighborhood Resource Center offers benefits screenings and enrollment, parenting classes, and expert legal and financial counseling. Our Community Consultation Center (CCC) houses a state-licensed mental health and primary health clinic, offers mental health services for children at three local schools, and provides vocational training and HIV family services. Services for the elderly include a Senior Center, the Senior Companion Volunteer Program, one of the first Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORC) in NYC and in public housing, and the largest Meals-on-Wheels program in Manhattan. Education and Employment Services: Henry Street offers comprehensive early childhood education daycare, after-school, recreational and summer camp programming; high school transition and adolescent education programs; college access and retention services; a peer-to-peer HIV education program for young adults; and comprehensive employment and internship programs designed to meet the needs of jobseekers of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. Transitional and Supportive Housing: For more than four decades, Henry Street's shelters—among them the nation's first apartment-style residence for families—have served as models of effective and compassionate services for the homeless. Our four shelters provide safe and supportive housing for domestic violence survivors, single adult women with mental health concerns, and families of all backgrounds. Henry Street also operates two supportive housing residences that enable individuals with health and mental health issues to live independently through the provision of rent subsidies, on-site case management, recreation, and support services. Visual and Performing Arts: Henry Street's Obie Award-winning Abrons Arts Center supports the creation and presentation of bold, multidisciplinary work; cultivates artists in all stages of their creative development through training and educational programs, internships, residencies, and commissions; and serves as an intersection of cultural engagement between local, national, and international audiences and art-workers.
