Mission Statement

The Rockefeller University's mission is to conduct science for the benefit of humanity.

About This Cause

The Rockefeller University, founded in 1901 and located on York Avenue and East 66th Street in New York City, is one of the world's leading biomedical research institutions. The university's unique department-free structure encourages a high degree of innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. There are approximately 70 laboratories, each headed by a primary investigator who reports directly to the president. Scientists conduct basic and clinical research in neuroscience, immunology, biochemistry, genomics, and many other areas related to human health. The university's bold, innovative approach to science has led to important contributions to biology and medicine, including: * Discovery that DNA is the chemical of heredity * Discovery that cancer can be caused by viruses * Development of methadone maintenance to treat opioid addiction * Elucidation of the role of tissue stem cells in homeostasis, wound repair, inflammation, and cancer * Development of a monoclonal antibody therapy for viral infections * Development of biochemical assays that paved the way for drugs that cure hepatitis C. Since Rockefeller's founding in 1901, 26 scientists have received Nobel Prizes, 25 have won Lasker Awards, and 20 have garnered the National Medal of Science, the highest honor in science and medicine awarded by the United States government.
