Mission Statement
Kaufman Music Center is New York’s go-to place for music education and performance. It's where music lovers, from curious fans to renowned performers, come together to explore their musical passions. Founded in 1952 as a community music school, today’s Kaufman Music Center is one of the city’s most vibrant cultural organizations, combining world-class teaching with electrifying performances featuring rising young classical stars, Broadway icons and cutting-edge performer/composers who are re-defining contemporary music.
About This Cause
Founded in 1952 as a community arts school serving 450 students, Kaufman Music Center has since grown into a vibrant, multi-faceted organization but remains committed to making the study and performance of music and arts accessible for audiences of all backgrounds—including those with limited access. Located in New York City’s vibrant Lincoln Square neighborhood, the Center serves around 50,000+ individuals annually—including around 5,000 students of all ages—from both its immediate neighborhood and other areas throughout the City. Through its interconnected music education and concert programming, the Center provides: • Opportunities for learners of all ages and abilities to experience a world class education in music, dance, and theater at Lucy Moses School, Manhattan’s largest community arts school, and at Special Music School, New York City’s only K-12 public school that provides free, intensive music education—including private lessons—alongside academics within the school day; • An environment for groundbreaking professional musical artists—including the Center’s Artists-in-Residence—to perform, create, and impact the field of music through eclectic presentations in its Merkin Hall venue and at offsite locations throughout the City; and • A dual emphasis on education and presentation that makes music and arts accessible, engaging, and relevant for diverse communities across New York City and beyond. Through these principal activities, which reflect its commitment to artistic excellence and pursuit of inclusive programming, Kaufman Music Center seeks to help individuals of all backgrounds explore their creativity through music and the arts.
