Mission Statement

Americas Society (AS) is the premier 501(c)(3) dedicated to education, debate, and dialogue in the Americas. Its mission is to foster an understanding of the contemporary political, social, and economic issues confronting Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada, and to increase public awareness and appreciation of the diverse cultural heritage of the Americas and the importance of the inter-American relationship.

About This Cause

Americas Society (AS) was founded in 1965 by David Rockefeller. Our Visual Arts program is a leading presenter of arts from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada in the US. We organize and present 2 to 3 exhibitions per year in our gallery, located on the first floor of our townhouse in the Upper East Side. Each exhibition is accompanied by the publication of a book that brings new scholarship to the field of Latin American art. We also feature artists, curators, scholars, and critics in a series of public programs. Americas Society's cultural programs in Visual Arts and Music present distinguished leading and emerging cultural figures from the region to New York City audiences. In 2019, through approx. 45 public programs (including three exhibitions, approx. 20 concerts, panel discussions, book launches, etc. every year), we engaged more than 9,000 visitors and featured over 300 artists, including NYC-based Latina(o)s. Our Music of the Americas Concert Series highlights the diversity of music composed, performed, and produced throughout the Americas. Since our foundation in 1965, we have presented hundreds of renowned and emerging musicians and composers from Latin America, the Caribbean, and Canada, as well as US Latinx artists. Our concerts feature early and baroque music, classical and new music, folk, and jazz from the Western Hemisphere. Music Director Sebastian Zubieta curates the series. Our concert series is a two-time recipient of the ASCAP/CMA Award for Adventurous Programming. We have also created a vigorous commissioning program, with fifteen pieces premiered as of Feb. 2020, and several more scheduled for the upcoming years. Americas Society is also the key destination for heads of state, policymakers, entrepreneurs and civil society leaders from the Americas. In collaboration with its affiliate Council Of the Americas (COA), Americas Soceity presents more than 100 public policy events such as roundtables and panel discussions on the most pressing political, economic and social issues facing the countries of the Western Hemisphere. Initiatives include two Working Groups focusing on Cuba and Venezuela, and a Women's Hemispheric Network. Extending the reach of the organization to audiences globally, Americas Society's publications include the policy magazine "Americas Quarterly," as well as visual arts catalogues, webcasts, news analysis on the website and social media.
