ACTION ON SMOKING & HEALTH

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia, 20036 United States

Mission Statement

Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) envisions a world free of tobacco-related damage, disease and death. This is accomplished by taking action to educate the public and decision makers, track the tobacco industry, and work for sensible public policies at the local, national and global levels.

About This Cause

ASH works closely with its allies to ensure that the public health community addresses the tobacco epidemic in a unified and coherent manner. ASH is not anti-smoker — it is anti-tobacco. ASH is a leader in this movement and has been since its inception in 1967. ASH is a nonprofit that thinks locally and acts globally. While smoking rates in the U.S. are lower than they have been in almost a century, the tobacco industry is wealthier than ever and has moved its marketing efforts into the developing world, cultivating new generations of customers and subjecting millions to addiction, disease and death. As the industry’s profits steadily inflate from sales to the world’s poor, the industry continues to donate to political campaigns, file lawsuits against governments and run advertising campaigns in the U.S. even after decades of public education and lawsuits. Taking Action ASH remains a leader in the fight against the harm caused by tobacco working both domestically and globally on initiatives that include: Initiating advocacy and public policy initiatives to inform and motivate the public and others in the tobacco control movement; Providing legal assistance; Developing and distributing publications and research documents for tobacco control best practices; and Building alliances and networks to engage the most qualified partners to cover various movement needs who are best suited to assist with specific topics.
