Mission Statement

For more than 45 years, the National Employment Law Project has worked to restore the promise of economic opportunity for working families across America. In partnership with grassroots and national allies, NELP promotes policies to create good jobs, enforce hard-won workplace rights, and help unemployed workers regain their economic footing.

About This Cause

Forty-five years ago, the National Employment Law Project (NELP) was founded to promote the employment rights of the working poor and unemployed. Today, NELP is one of the nation’s leading voices promoting employment policies that deliver on the nation’s promise of economic opportunity. From its main office in New York City and locations throughout the country, NELP shapes model employment policies at the local, state, and national levels through empirical research, legal and policy advocacy, strategic communications, building alliances with key constituencies and engaging in economic justice campaigns. NELP works from the ground up to build systemic change. Our collaborative partnerships with grassroots and community groups elevate the leadership of directly-impacted people. We develop and test innovative policy ideas in cities and states, synthesizing the best practices and models gleaned from these cutting-edge reforms to effect change across the nation. In the process, we leverage our national network to highlight local efforts, lifting up their voices to maximize their advocacy. NELP's programming is split into two tracks: the first focuses on the issue of access and opportunity, the second on ensuring that all jobs are good jobs. In partnership with national, state, and local allies, NELP promotes policies and programs that create good jobs, strengthen upward mobility, enforce hard-won worker rights, and help unemployed workers regain their economic footing through improved benefits and services.
