Mission Statement

Ballet Tech Foundation Inc. has as its purpose the furtherance and evolution of classical dance, and with that, the investigation of choreography and dancing aimed towards creating a richer and evolving American ballet mode. Complementing this, Ballet Tech is committed to introducing tens of thousands of New York City public school children to the beauty and rigor of classical dance and providing those most talented with the dance training necessary to fulfill their natural gifts, tuition-free. Ballet Tech pledges itself to the development of succeeding generations of classical dancers, whose diversity reflects the full spectrum of the American community.

About This Cause

Since its founding in 1978 by choreographer Eliot Feld, the Ballet Tech school has auditioned 930,334 3rd-5th grade children in 665 public elementary schools in NYC for its tuition-free ballet training program. Of those children auditioned, 26,589 have participated in Ballet Tech’s Introduction to Ballet classes. Children with physical aptitude and an abundance of enthusiasm for classic dance and the rigors of requisite early training are invited to Ballet Tech’s full-time school. For over four decades, Ballet Tech students in grades 4 through 8 have received intensive tuition-free dance training, principally ballet, at our studios at 890 Broadway, as well as a strong academic education provided on site by the NYC Department of Education (DOE). This public-private collaboration eliminates chronic impediments of access and opportunity and provides a nurturing yet rigorous environment for young learners. Together, Ballet Tech and the DOE coordinate their respective areas of expertise for the advancement of the academic education and dance aspirations of Ballet Tech students.
