Mission Statement

The Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) is a New York-based national organization founded in 1974 that protects and promotes the civil rights of Asian Americans. By combining litigation, advocacy, education, and organizing, AALDEF works with Asian American communities across the country to secure human rights for all.

About This Cause

AALDEF works with partners and communities across the country to secure social justice for all through litigation, economic justice for workers, immigrant rights, educational equity, housing and environmental justice, anti-trafficking, and voting rights and civic participation. AALDEF works to end discrimination based on race, national origin, language ability, religion, and immigration status. AALDEF’s programs are focused on addressing the needs of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable members of the Asian American community, including immigrants, new citizens, the working poor, survivors of trafficking, victims of hate crimes, and people with limited English proficiency. We also work to counter the rising anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim sentiments that are having profound and negative impacts on the safety, security, and well-being of Asian Americans. Annually, AALDEF directly serves the following individuals and groups: • Over 1,000 clients with free legal counsel, advice, and referrals; • Over 15 grassroots and community organizations and their constituencies with free legal clinics, technical assistance, and Know Your Rights trainings; • 1,000 attorneys and advocates with legal trainings; • More than 14,000 Asian American voters nationwide, ensuring their voices are heard • Over 300 law students, attorneys, and professors from law schools and pro bono firms trained and mobilized to advocate for voting rights, workers’ rights, and the protection of civil rights. Recent victories include: a) Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin. AALDEF's amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court was cited specifically by Justice Kennedy in his majority opinion upholding the consideration of race as one of several factors in the college admissions process. AALDEF's brief representing 65 Asian American groups and higher education officials (including UT-Austin's Asian American student and faculty associations) pointed out that there was no evidence of discrimination against Asian Americans in UT-Austin's affirmative action policies. b) OCA-Houston v. State of Texas. In August 2016, AALDEF won a judgment from a Texas federal court, which ruled that the state election law restricting interpreters at the polls violated the federal Voting Rights Act. A statewide injunction against this discriminatory law will enable Asian American and other minority voters to receive language assistance from a person of their choice on Election Day. c) 2016 Election Monitoring and Asian American Exit Poll. AALDEF dispatched over 950 volunteers in 14 states to monitor polling places, document voting problems, and conduct a nonpartisan Asian American exit poll for the 2016 presidential election, the largest survey of its kind in the nation. In the 2012 elections, AALDEF polled 9,096 Asian American voters in 14 states and documented their candidate preferences, party enrollment, and issues of concern. d) Justice. Since 2012, AALDEF has won over: a. $3.87 million in back wages and judgments for low-income workers; b. $16.16 million in judgments for trafficking survivors.
