Mission Statement

New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI) builds strength and capacity in marginalized communities to achieve dignity, justice, and equality. These communities face systemic challenges — around health, immigration status, disability, race, and environmental harms — that traditional legal work can’t overcome. NYLPI’s unique civil rights work leverages partnerships with community groups, advocacy organizations, and the private bar to create lasting change. Its interdisciplinary staff of 35 lawyers and advocates creates access to medical care, housing, quality education, legal immigration status, and more that improves the lives of hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers every year. With your support, NYLPI pursues justice for all New Yorkers.

About This Cause

We have fought for more than 40 years to protect civil rights and achieve lived equality for communities in need. Even in our vibrant and diverse New York, millions confront bias and barriers based on race, poverty, disability, and immigration status. Our work activates the power of these communities as they lead the fight to make equal justice a reality. Their priorities drive our commitments to civil rights and to health, disability, immigrant, and environmental justice. We tackle big problems and invest years of effort to solve them. NYLPI combines the power of law, organizing, and the private bar to make lasting change where it’s needed most. 2020 has been a year of upheaval and significant change for these communities, and the urgency and necessity of NYLPI’s work is clearer than ever. The combined crises of COVID-19 and systemic racism are deeply intertwined, and NYLPI works at the forefront of solutions here in New York. • With our Medical Providers Network, we provide rapid medical evaluations for people at high risk in immigration detention facilities, and our advocacy has freed many of them.   • We fight for an end to police secrecy that protects bad actors by litigating the release of disciplinary records and body-worn camera footage. • We represent public school parents to advocate for students with special education needs, as the school system turns precipitously to computer-based learning.   • We fight for accessible transportation for New Yorkers with disabilities who rely on Access-A-Ride for lifesaving access to healthcare providers. We ensured that Access-A-Ride ceases to provide shared rides, which is especially key as we social distance.  • We support other nonprofits with legal advice and resources, including applying for PPP loans, as they navigate this new landscape and continue to make a difference in the lives of thousands of New Yorkers. • We hosted large online town hall events educating thousands of people on their rights to health coverage for COVID-19 regardless of immigration status and mobilized thousands of others to act to reduce the air pollution that increases risk of COVID-19 death. In 2021, we plan to deepen and expand our community-led campaigns for justice, with a few highlights below: • Clean Energy, Clean Air. NYLPI fights the pollution proven to increase the risk of serious illness or death from COVID-19, particularly in Black and Brown communities. Our PEAK Campaign, in partnership with fellow environmental justice advocates, works to transition NYC away from highly-polluting fossil fuel power plants, seeking to end the longstanding pollution burden from power plants on the city’s most climate-vulnerable communities. And our Clean School Bus coalition launched to fight for clean and safe busing for all NYC students. The campaign works to transition NYC’s 10,000 school bus fleet from diesel to electric by 2040. • Immigrant Health. With the increased threat of COVID-19, we expanded our work seeking release of people in detention. And we have added new capacity to work with transgender, gender non-conforming, and HIV+ immigrants to access medical care and strengthen our partnerships with LGBTQIA+ community-based organizations and coalitions. • Police Reform. Following successful litigation to obtain body-worn camera footage of the deaths of individuals experiencing a mental health crisis, we have been driving policy change to remove police as responders to in these crises. • Racial Justice. Our landmark racial discrimination class action lawsuit against the NYC Department of Education and Public Schools Athletic League fights for sports equity for Black and Latinx students who have access to far fewer teams and sports in NYC schools.
