About This Cause

New York City Center has played a defining role in the cultural life of New York City for over 70 years. Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia saved our building from demolition in 1943, transforming an historic Shriner’s meeting hall into Manhattan’s first performing arts center. In its early years, City Center served as the original home to George Balanchine and New York City Ballet; Julius Rudel, Beverly Sills, and the New York City Opera; Leonard Bernstein and the New York City Symphony, and a host of famous mid-century actors. Then and today, City Center is dedicated to making the arts accessible to the broadest possible audience with diverse programming that reflects the eclecticism and spirit of New York City, including: Fall for Dance, dedicated to the vitality and breadth of dance; Encores! and Encores! Off-Center, the celebrated series that presents the full story of the American musical; the annual season of Principal Dance Company Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater; and presentations of celebrated national and international dance and theater companies. The Education program provides innovative arts education to over 9,000 K-12 children from underserved neighborhoods throughout the City; and our artist development programs provide a range of support services for hundreds of New York City artists each year.
