Mission Statement

Soho Rep provides radical theater makers with productions of the highest caliber and tailor-made development at key junctures in their artistic practice. We elevate artists as thought leaders and citizens who change the field and society. Artistic autonomy is paramount at Soho Rep—we encourage an unmediated connection between artists and audiences to create a springboard for transformation and rich civic life beyond the walls of our small theater. We re-center the narratives of people who are underrepresented in our field. We interrogate the history and form of Theater and ask why and for whom Theater exists. We prioritize open access to our work. We keep tickets affordable, build two-way coalitions and partnerships across the City, and continually invite new audiences to our shows. The sustainability of Soho Rep is directly tied to the individuals at the heart of our theater. We provide holistic support and fair pay. We are clear-sighted about our organizational capacity, which generates a more reasonable workload for all. We make ambitious and destabilizing theater, which demands even greater diligence to create a nurturing and supportive environment.

About This Cause

Soho Rep is an almost 50-year old theater named the "Best Theatre" in Time Out New York's Best of the City Award in 2021 and "a home for experimentation and audacious swings” by The New York Times. Plays that premiere at Soho Rep, such as 2019 Pulitzer Prize-winning FAIRVIEW, go on to be seen by hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. We've also given many playwrights their Off-Broadway debuts, including Jackie Sibblies Drury, Alesha Harris, Lucas Hnath and Young Jean Lee. Many of our most acclaimed productions have been Soho Rep commissions, were generated in the Writer Director Lab, and/ or developed in weeklong Studio workshops, including Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ AN OCTOROON, Annie Baker’s Uncle VANYA, David Adjmi’s MARIE ANTOINETTE, Anne Washburn’s 10 OUT OF 12. Our productions have been recognized with 21 OBIE Awards; the 2016 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical for César Alvarez and The Lisps’ FUTURITY; nine Drama Desk nominations; two Kesselring Awards; and the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Drama for Jackie Sibblies Drury's FAIRVIEW. In 2020 we created Project Number One, a new job creation program where we invited eight theatre-makers onto staff, providing them a $1,250/week salary (on par with administrative salaries) and health insurance to address the particularly severe impact of COVID-19 on freelance artists. Since then, we've continued to employ multiple artists as full-time staff members. Additionally, through this program we completely restructured our production budgets to prioritize living wages for every single artist working at Soho Rep.
