Mission Statement

Meals-on-Wheels of White Plains serves those in our community unable to shop or prepare adequate meals themselves, primarily consisting of the frail elderly. Our goal is to bring each client a smile and medically appropriate meals for their specific needs, that taste great and look pleasing.

About This Cause

Meals-on-Wheels of White Plains is a non-profit organization made up of volunteers with a commitment to delivering both food and compassion to our neighbors in need. Meals-on-Wheels of White Plains serves members of our community unable to shop or prepare adequate meals themselves. These are primarily the frail elderly. We provide two delicious and nutritionally balanced meals per day – one hot meal and one cold for five days per week, six for those without any additional support in the community. In order fulfill our mission of providing "medically appropriate" meals, individually prepared and delivered to specific clients and their health needs, a professional dietitian carefully planned our menu, reviewed recipes and ingredients used, and alternative options for special diets. All of our meals have no added salt, and diabetic, low cholesterol. Special diets include Diabetic (the most common request), Soft, and Chopped. Food allergies and aversions are accounted, Examples of meals are prepared include: No Pork, No Red Meat, No Fish, No Red Sauce, No Pasta, No Broccoli, even "No Tuna - Likes Hot Fish." Any person living in the City of White Plains who is unable to shop for or prepare meals for themselves, regardless of age or income, is eligible to receive Meals-on-Wheels. We welcome referrals from doctors, hospitals, social workers, family members, and of course, from potential clients themselves. Referral forms are available for download on our website: www.mowwp.org. Meals-on-Wheels of White Plains delivers more than just a meal. We deliver some companionship to people who otherwise might be alone all day. We deliver independence to neighbors who are now able to stay in their own home. We deliver security. Part of our responsibility is to serve as a “safety check” on our clients and calling 911 or family members in case of an emergency. Meals-on-Wheels takes time, people, and yes, money. An army of dedicated volunteers is responsible for the deliveries. Meals-on-Wheels has the same expenses as any organization. We pay for supplies, telephone service, insurance. We pay for the food we serve, our largest single expense, over $160,000 per year. We operate on a fee-for-service basis using a sliding scale to calculate reduced fees for those unable to pay a full fee. The majority of Meals-on-Wheels clients are now subsidized to the tune of over $100,000 per year, requiring contributions and grants to make up the difference. This year, when one third of Meals on Wheels programs have waiting lists, we are using cash reserves to meet the need. Whether or not we continue to do so - is up to you.
