Mission Statement
The Foundation for the Study of Independent Social Ideas publishes Dissent, a quarterly magazine of politics and ideas. Establishing itself as one of America’s leading intellectual journals in 1954, Dissent has since published articles by Hannah Arendt, Norman Mailer, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Ellen Willis, Richard Wright, George Packer, and many others. We publish the very best in political argument, and take pride in cultivating the next generation of labor journalists, cultural critics, and political polemicists.
About This Cause
Founded in 1954, Dissent has long been a leading voice of the democratic left. For a magazine that has always been described as “little,” Dissent has had an outsized ambition and influence. In our pages and on our website, editors and contributors including Irving Howe, Hannah Arendt, Norman Mailer, Richard Wright, Michael Walzer, Barbara Ehrenreich, Nancy Fraser, Arlie Russell Hochschild, Astra Taylor, Sarah Jaffe, Michelle Chen, and Jedediah Purdy have argued with insight and authority about almost every major issue in American and world politics. Dissent has always been more than just the sum of what we publish; it is a political home for left intellectuals and activists. In recent years, this home has grown larger as new thinkers and organizers have emerged from movements such as Occupy, the Fight for $15, Black Lives Matter, and the struggle to stop climate change. We have helped define and mobilize this next generation of the left—one committed to the democratic socialist tradition but also engaged in the urgent conflicts of our time. In 2016, the Bernie Sanders campaign showed us that such ideas resonate with a wide cross-section of Americans. Since the election, our base has grown and we are reaching more subscribers than we have in decades. Dissent aims to explore and deepen these ideas—so that a new generation can carry them forward beyond each national election.
