Premised on the belief that the arts are an effective vehicle for social transformation, Hook Arts Media unites artists and community members as co-creators in dynamic cultural activities. Through site-specific performances, festivals, and performing arts and media education programs, Hook Arts Media stimulates the social imagination through acts of informed expression, creating a more just and joyful world.
About This Cause
Hook Arts Media is an award-winning education, media, and arts organization that activates neighborhood and school spaces to create transformational access to career-building training, performance, and critical engagement. For more than 30 years, Hook Arts Media has made education, media, and arts a vital component of community change in the waterfront community of Red Hook, Brooklyn and has replicated our programming throughout low-income communities in New York. Through vibrant in-school, after-school, and community-based arts education programs, Hook Arts Media offers robust, arts-centered programming that helps young people become changemakers in their own lives, their schools and their communities. HAM’s mission is to unite artists and community members to co-create cultural activities, using the arts as a vehicle for critical investigations that lead to personal and social transformation and promote a more just and equitable society. Major Activities: • Arts For Under-Served Youth: Model school-wide performing arts and media programs serving hundreds of students annually from September through June at high-needs public high schools in Red Hook and other low-income NYC neighborhoods, with a focus on Transfer High Schools. • Community-based afterschool/summer media programs in Red Hook, serving dozens of young people annually, helping students navigate the transition to adulthood, earn stipends, and develop technical skills. • Red Hook Fest: A cherished tradition since 1993, Red Hook Fest reaches an audience of 4,500 with a community barbecue and dance party, info kiosks, and free performances by professionals and youth.
