Mission Statement

The mission of the Stepping Stones Foundation is to foster public understanding of alcoholism and inspire recovery by preserving and sharing the historic home, archive, and legacy of Bill Wilson, Alcoholics Anonymous Cofounder, and Lois Wilson, Al-Anon Family Groups cofounder. The private, nonprofit, tax-exempt organization operates the site that was the home of Bill and Lois Wilson from 1941 until their deaths in 1971 and 1988, respectively. The Stepping Stones Foundation maintains, preserves, and makes available to the public for tours the 8.17 acres of gardens and grounds with six buildings,10,000 objects from the 1800s to 1980s that belonged to the Wilsons, an archive of 100,000 documents highlighted by the Bill and Lois' personal papers. Tour highlights are the home as well as the writing studio where Bill wrote the book "12 Steps and 12 Traditions." Tours are offered six days a week by reservation and begin inside the Welcome Center featuring an orientation display featuring highlights from the Archive. Online and off-site presentations of also tell the story of the Wilsons, the home, and their legacy in the field of recovery from alcoholism.

About This Cause

Lois Wilson created the Stepping Stones Foundation in 1979 to maintain and preserve the historic home and papers of Bill and Lois W. and to ensure that visitors from around the world would continue to have access to the place where important work of the 12-Step recovery took shape. Stepping Stones is the privately-run nonprofit, tax-exempt National Historic Landmark home of Alcoholics Anonymous Cofounder Bill W. and Al-Anon Family Groups Cofounder Lois W. Bill and Lois made Stepping Stones their home from 1941 until their deaths in 1971 and 1988, respectively. The Stepping Stones Foundation maintains, operates and preserves the 8.17 acres of gardens and grounds with six buildings, 15,000 objects from the 1800s to 1980s that belonged to the Wilsons, an archive of 100,000 highlighted by the Bill and Lois' personal papers, and more.
