We ignite growth in community-based programs to expand opportunities for the young people of New York City.
About This Cause
Every three years, SparkYouth scours New York City to find the best small, youth development programs, which demonstrate that they are doing an excellent job and are poised for expansion. We carefully examine dozens of programs, checking out the leadership, financial health, potential for expansion and ability to transform the lives of their participants. SparkYouth’s value-added model makes a three-year commitment to contribute significant funding we raise from our supporters to the programs we select for the portfolio, serving as one of their top funders. But SparkYouth goes further than other funders by providing intensive individual mentoring and professional development workshops to the Executive Directors and other senior staff of our programs, fostering critical collaboration between the programs, and enhancing each organization’s skills in finance, technology, and development. Experience has taught SparkYouth’s board and staff that there is a wide variety of ways to address the needs of NYC’s diverse youth population. Moreover, trends in education and workforce readiness are constantly evolving. So SparkYouth vets and selects from a wide range of programs in NYC’s under-resourced neighborhoods, keeping current with the latest innovative techniques that are inspiring youth to succeed. We visit our programs and maintain regular contact with their leadership, ensuring they are making progress toward stated goals. All of the programs in our portfolio use SparkYouth’s investment to expand their services, many opening in new sites, enrolling more youth and deepening the services they provide. Ultimately it’s all about opportunity for NYC children.
