Mission Statement

New York City Bird Alliance is a grassroots community that works for the protection of wild birds and habitat in the five boroughs, improving the quality of life for all New Yorkers. We envision a day when birds and people in the five boroughs enjoy a healthy, livable habitat.

About This Cause

Remarkably, more than 360 species of birds have been sighted in New York City, an important stop along the Atlantic Flyway during migration, and a significant habitat for nesting waterbirds. Our core programs conserving these birds are: • Project Safe Flight protects land birds with programs and advocacy that seek to mitigate the many perils of reflective window glass, artificial light, rat poison, and other threats. • Waterbirds of New York City studies bird health in New York Harbor, monitoring the ecosystem and recording changes in population numbers. • Connecting People to Nature through public programs includes bird walks, boat tours, recruiting hundreds of volunteers annually to participate in environmental stewardship. These efforts take place in all boroughs. Our science-based research allows us to provide resource managers with the information that they need to preserve and repair our 47 square miles of parklands and 600 miles of shoreline.
