PEOPLE FOR THE AMERICAN WAY FOUNDATION

WASHINGTON, District of Columbia, 20005-5023 United States

Mission Statement

People For the American Way works to build a democratic society that implements the ideals of freedom, equality, opportunity and justice for all. We encourage civic participation, defend fundamental rights, and fight to dismantle systemic barriers to equitable opportunity. We fight against right-wing extremism and the injustice it fosters.

About This Cause

People For the American Way Foundation was founded in 1981 by legendary television and film producer Norman Lear, the late Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, and a group of business, civic, religious, and civil rights leaders who were disturbed by the divisive rhetoric of newly politicized televangelists. Advocacy affiliate People For the American Way was founded soon after. We are dedicated to making the promise of America real for every American. Our vision of the American Way is a vibrantly diverse society in which the laws are just and applied equitably; where everyone has the freedom, opportunity and access to pursue their dreams; and where all people are encouraged to participate in civic and political life. Our America acknowledges its history, respects difference and dissent, combats hatred and bigotry, nurtures creativity, and seeks justice and equity for all.
