Mission Statement
The mission of the Boys & Girls Club of Harlem (BGCHarlem) is to provide access and opportunities for youth to reach their full potential as responsible members of the community.
About This Cause
Since 1980 BGCHarlem has achieved our mission through the provision of comprehensive out-‐of-‐school time programming that fosters academic achievement, character and leadership skills, and healthy lifestyles. Annually, BGCHarlem reaches over 1,200 children and youth ages 6-‐18 throughout Harlem through our youth development programming. We make our services available to all. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, creed, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, political affiliation, or ability to pay. In 2016, BGCHarlem served over 1,500 children and youth ages 6-‐18 through community outreach (735 reached) and through our out-‐of-‐school time/after-‐school programming (773 registered members). The majority of our registered members (87%) live in low-‐income households with approximately 63% of these households headed by single parents. Over 83% of the youth we serve are Black and Latino; 15% are English language learners. All of the young people we serve attend schools in Harlem where on average 76% of students qualify for free lunch; only 16% of third graders pass standardized reading tests (Citizens' Committee for Children of New York); and only 61% of students graduate from high school on time, with only a little more than half of these graduates receiving Regents diplomas (NYC Department of Education). The unemployment rate among youth ages 16-‐24 in Harlem is 32.6%.
