Mission Statement

The mission of Encore Community Services is to provide care and service to the elderly of the Clinton/Times Square/Midtown communities, and to any elderly person who comes to us; to assist those who are vulnerable and frail, poor and homeless, homebound and lonely, frequently desperate, most often ignored; to help them with their daily needs that they might live as independently as possible, with dignity and decency, in a non-institutional manner, in a safe and caring environment. We believe we are all part of the human family and have an obligation to love one another. By nurturing, respecting and enabling, Encore hopes to improve the quality of an older person’s life, in an approach that emanates from the core of Encore’s commitment: we believe that what we do comes from the heart, and the heart is the center of all.

About This Cause

Founded in 1977, Encore Community Services mission is to improve the quality of life for older New Yorkers of the Clinton/Times Square/Midtown, Chelsea and West Side communities—and to any senior who comes to us. We assist those who are vulnerable and frail, poor and homeless, home-bound and lonely, frequently desperate, most often ignored. And we help them with their daily needs so they can live as independently as possible, with dignity and self reliance, and in a non-institutional manner. Encore operates programs at three sites: the Older Adult Center; Encore 49, an SRO-style supportive housing facility for older adult with experience of homeless and/or mental illness; and Encore West, a low income independent living facility, which is also home to Encore's Older Adult Lifelong Learning Center. We are perhaps best know for our Nutrition Program. Food security among seniors continues to be an extremely pressing issue— especially for homebound clients who have little to no other food sources and no one to shop for them. Currently, Encore staff and volunteers provide over 500,000 meals annually. One of the most exciting goals to come out of our recent strategic planning process is the commitment to increase meal production from 500,000 to over 1 million over the next five years. Encore’s Social Service Department has launched a new and innovative service concept, called the Successful Aging & Community Wellness (SACW) team. What makes our program distinctive is our holistic, wrap-around approach when connecting elders to services. Adapting the International Council on Aging’s Active Aging and Wellness model, Encore promotes ways for older adults to lead engaging lives— regardless of age, socioeconomic status or health. This model identifies seven dimensions of wellness: emotional, financial, cognitive, physical, vocational, social and spiritual. Implicit to this approach is the recognition that the problems facing seniors are interconnected. One major innovation is the recognition and incorporation of creativity and the arts into our program.
