Mission Statement

The Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP) champions the future of storytelling by connecting artists with essential resources at all stages of development and distribution. As of 2021, IFP has gone through a rebranding to become The Gotham Film & Media Institute. The organization fosters a vibrant and sustainable independent storytelling community, represents a growing network of storytellers around the world, and plays a key role in developing 350 new feature film, documentary and audio works each year. Its year-round programs, include Gotham Week, Gotham Labs, the Gotham Awards, Gotham EDU, a fiscal sponsorship program, and the publication of Filmmaker Magazine. During its 42-year history, The Gotham has supported over 10,000 projects and offered resources to more than 20,000 filmmakers, including Barry Jenkins, Chloe Zhao, Debra Granik, Miranda July, Michael Moore, Dee Rees, Nanfu Wang, Laura Poitras, Richard Linklater, Julia Reichert, and Ava Duvernay.

The Gotham guides storytellers through the process of making and distributing their work. It offers creative, technological and business support through year-round programming such as labs and its founding program Gotham Week (originally the Independent Feature Film Market) an independent film, television and audio market to connect artists with developing project and industry representatives who can move their projects forward through funding and distribution opportunities. Though these and other offerings such as seminars, classes, conferences, and mentorships—The Gotham creates exciting opportunities for promising new voices from a diverse range of racial, ethnic, religious, ideological and sexual perspectives.
