Mission Statement
Nontraditional Employment for Women (NEW) prepares, trains, and places women in the skilled construction, utility, and maintenance trades, helping women achieve economic independence and a secure future for themselves and their families. At the same time, NEW provides a pipeline of qualified workers to the industries that build, move, power, green, and maintain New York.
About This Cause
NEW’s goal is to increase the number of women employed in trade careers that offer strong wages, benefits, training, and advancement. These career paths can fundamentally transform one’s income and wealth but have been less accessible to women. Through its core programs, NEW offers students no-cost, comprehensive training in the hard and soft skills needed to thrive in a trades career. NEW’s innovative curriculum, developed in collaboration with union apprenticeships and employers, includes basic hands-on shop classes in carpentry and electrical work, plumbing, lifting and carrying, trades math, and health and safety training. NEW also provides social services that connect students with resources and referrals to maintain stability during their training period. NEW places graduates into the union apprenticeships through direct entrance. Women comprise two-thirds of minimum wage earners. Over 80 percent of the women that walk through NEW’s doors are low-income, with 75 percent receiving some form of public assistance. Upon entering the unions, graduates gain access to fulfilling careers, comprehensive benefits, and robust wages averaging $20.00 per hour that grows steadily during their apprenticeship and beyond.
