Mission Statement

EVC is a non-profit youth media organization that teaches documentary filmmaking and the broader media arts as a means to develop artistic, critical literacy, and career skills of underserved young people, while nurturing their idealism and commitment to social change.

About This Cause

EVC challenges structural inequities and harmful narratives that disadvantage young people of color in education, careers, and life. We do this by teaching documentary filmmaking to help young people thrive as learners, artists and social justice leaders; building the capacity of teachers and public schools to create youth-centered, culturally responsive classrooms; mobilizing youth-produced media to inspire action; and disrupting systems that harm BIPOC youth, their communities, and the world. EVC began in 1984 with a simple idea: put video cameras in the hands of youth from low-income communities and teach them to go out into the city, ask hard questions, and tell stories about the world as they see it. Over the last 38 years, EVC has grown to an award winning, internationally acclaimed leader in youth media arts education, supporting positive life and career paths for over 28,000 youth. We have shared our signature curriculum Youth Powered Video with 15,000 practitioners, trained over 1,100 teachers in our student-centered, culturally-responsive media arts pedagogy, and created 220+ highly acclaimed youth-produced documentaries that are having ripple effects in communities worldwide. Films created by EVC youth producers have won over 180 awards, including two White House Honors and an Emmy.
