About This Cause
The River Project (TRP) is a marine science field station that has operated in lower Manhattan since 1986. TRP works to protect and restore the ecosystem of the Hudson River estuary and New York Harbor through scientific research, hands-on environmental education, habitat improvement, and innovative waterfront programs. TRP supports this mission through a variety of research and educational programs based out of its Wetlab, which houses a 3,000 gallon flow-through aquarium system. This important tool allows for wild fishes and invertebrates to be caught, kept on display seasonally for research and education, and then released back into the river. The Marine Biology Internship Program (MBIP) and Environmental Field Trip Program use the Hudson River as a classroom. Each year since 2007, MBIP has hosted 25-30 high school and college students. Over 22,000 students from all five boroughs, Pre K-college, have participated in hands-on field trips at TRP since 1999. This program continues to grow each year; from 2015 to 2016 there was a 26% increase in the number of students who attended trips. TRP also hosts Wetlab Look-ins, free public afterschool programs, twice weekly. In addition, TRP’s Wetlab serves as an active marine science laboratory, where research is being conducted on a rotating array of topics, including oyster restoration, water quality in the lower Hudson, and a 30-year fish survey that monitors local fish populations over time. These research programs provide critical data to members of the public, interest groups, and scientists, and have informed government policy. For example, data collected from the fish survey was influential in New York State’s designation of a sanctuary site in the Hudson River estuary. The River Project’s programs and live exhibits expand public understanding of the natural world and inspire people to appreciate and value the ecosystem in which they live.
