Mission Statement

The Doe Fund helps break devastating cycles of addiction, poverty, homelessness, and recidivism. By investing in human capital, we transform oppressive systems while providing direct service to those impacted by them.

About This Cause

Since 1985, The Doe Fund has empowered nearly 30,000 individuals with the tools to break the devastating cycle of addiction, poverty, homelessness, and incarceration. The organization’s Ready, Willing & Able program provides paid work, housing, and comprehensive support services to formerly homeless and incarcerated men in New York City. Ready, Willing & Able participants work in social enterprises that provide value to the larger community, including a street cleaning and sanitation service that covers 115 miles of NYC streets. The program also offers case management, adult basic education, computer and financial literacy courses, addiction recovery resources, and paid career training in fields that provide living wages, including in skilled trades. Graduates of Ready, Willing & Able are 62% less likely to reenter the criminal justice system compared to demographically-identical individuals, and 82% retain employment after three months. The Doe Fund’s Work Works model has been replicated in six communities across the country; within New York City, the organization operates over 1 million square feet of affordable, supportive, and transitional housing.
