Mission Statement

Homeward NYC (a dba of West End Residences HDFC, Inc.) provides housing and wraparound services that empower homeless young mothers, LGBTQ young people and older adults to live life forward. We believe that by first obtaining housing, homeless New Yorkers can find the stability necessary to address trauma and build the skills they need as they transition into the next phase in their lives.

About This Cause

Homeward NYC (a dba of West End Residences HDFC, Inc.) began in 1989 with an intergenerational residence—the site is a transitional family shelter for homeless mothers and children and long-term, affordable housing for low-income and homeless seniors. In 2011, we opened our first LGBTQ young adult supportive housing site. Like the young mothers at our mixed-age housing, LGBTQ youth start adulthood having experienced physical and emotional abuse for their gender identity or sexual orientation. In 2015, we opened a second LGBTQ site. In 2021, we broke ground on a third site that will serve 50 LGBTQ young adults. Homeward Central Harlem is scheduled to open fall 2023. Residents come from all five boroughs, and all residents are very low income or formerly homeless. In addition to suffering the trauma of homelessness, most of our clients have experienced family violence or rejection. At each location, we provide housing and support services including counseling, case management for residents to access financial and health care benefits, connections to community resources, group activities, and basic life skills (today known as “adulting”). These services work to prevent future homelessness through care, resources, and skills-building for housing stability. In 2020, we rebranded West End Residences and our True Colors Housing for LGBTQ young adults under the unifying name Homeward NYC.
