About This Cause

MIX NYC was founded in 1987 as a project of two people responding to the lack of queer images in the experimental film world, the art world and lesbian & gay film festivals. The festival immediately resonated with audiences, and it continued for five years organized by artists in their spare time. MIX NYC is now an internationally recognized venue for experimental media arts. MIX NYC has also spawned a number of autonomously-run international festivals, including MIX Brasil (founded 1993), MIX Mexico (1996) MIX Milan (2008) and MIX Copenhagen (2011). MIX NYC’s primary activities are: • The production of the annual New York Queer Experimental Film Festival, a carnival of LGBT experimental media in New York City. This six-day event, held in the November, is the most widely recognized public face of the organization, presenting over 200 films, videos, installations and presentations by over 175 artists, drawn from 15 countries. The programming at MIX NYC has had a broad influence on film festivals, museums and avant-garde showcases in this country and worldwide. As the festival has evolved, it has embraced installation art, performances incorporating film in an integral way, and an often over the top immersive environment in which all the activities take place. • The exhibition and promotion of the festival's programs and artists through free local community screenings, regular monthly screenings and national touring programs throughout the year. To reach out to audiences beyond downtown Manhattan, MIX takes programs to venues in other boroughs. • A Different Take, media training for disadvantaged LGBT youth. This free program began in 2006 to help develop the next generation of media artists, targeting the most marginalized. • ACT UP Oral History Project -- Begun in 2003 with support from the Ford Foundation, and now in partnership with Harvard University, this on-going history of the seminal AIDS activist group makes available via the web and in libraries over 100 video interviews and transcripts with surviving members who made a difference through community action. • Filmmaker Resource & Fiscal Sponsor -- MIX provides support and fiscal sponsorship for a select group of media artists. Recent projects include Sam Feder's Kate Bornstein is a Queer and Pleasant Danger, as well as David France's 2013 Oscar-nominated documentary How To Survive A Plague. • Film Preservation – Since its inception, MIX has been a strong voice for film preservation issues when other festivals have concentrated only on exhibition; we now do preservation work on selected films, beginning with the work of Marguerite Paris (1934-2007)
