Mission Statement

Comunilife is a New York City based nonprofit committed to providing affordable and supportive housing and mental health services to at-risk and marginalized residents. Many of our clients are formerly homeless adults living with HIV/AIDS and/or mental illness. We are nationally recognized for our Life is Precious Program which provides nonclinical services to Latina teens at risk of suicide.

About This Cause

Since Comunilife opened in 1989 it has been committed to providing vulnerable communities with housing and culturally sensitive supportive services. We believe that no one should be without the housing and supports they need to lead a healthy and meaningful life. With programs that include supportive and affordable housing, medical respite services and Latina adolescent suicide prevention activities, Comunilife served more than 4,000 low-income and vulnerable New Yorkers in 2023. Ninety percent (90%) of our clients are African American or Latino; and 50% have Spanish as their primary (or sole) language. All struggle with profound challenges including chronic homelessness, HIV/AIDS and other major medical issues, serious mental illnesses, and substance abuse. Comunilife’s 2,818 units of affordable and supportive housing address the need for safe, affordable, service enriched housing for a low-income population that has difficulty maintaining stable housing. Comunilife develops programs to meet emerging community needs and gap in services as evidenced by our Medical Respite and Life is Precious™ Suicide Prevention Programs. Housing - Comunilife’s 2,818 units of affordable and supportive housing address the need for safe, affordable, service enriched housing for a low-income population that has difficulty maintaining stable housing. A majority of our 2,127 supportive housing clients have a history of homelessness and/or long-term hospitalizations. Many are living with mental illness, HIV/AIDS and other chronic illnesses. Comunilife has 1,750 supportive and affordable apartments/units in 8 supportive residences, 6 mixed population buildings and 1 low-income apartment buildings as well as 1,068 scatter-site apartments in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan. Medical Respite Program Our Medical Respite Program, which began in 2011, provides short-term supportive housing and case management services to multiply-challenged patients leaving hospital care without a viable home in which to recuperate. Comunilife currently has contracts with hospitals, managed care companies and other health related organizations. The Medical Respite Program, which has an average stay of 53 days, helps break the cycle of shelter to hospital to shelter that many homeless experience. This results in better health and social outcomes for clients, a reduced shelter population, and financial savings for hospitals. Suicide Prevention Activities for At-Risk Latina Teens Comunilife is a leader in the field of Latina adolescent suicide prevention. Our Life is Precious™ Program, which opened in 2008, provides non-clinical, treatment adjacent services to girls’ ages 12 to 17 in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan as well as Poughkeepsie and Yonkers, New York. These services include academic support, creative arts therapies, music lessons, wellness activities and concrete family services; all of which are designed to reduce the risk factors associated with Latina adolescent suicide. In addition to its core activities LIP also provides: Civic Engagement Activities, Community Education and Awareness, and Enhanced Parent/Family Engagement Services. With funding from the NYS Office of Mental Health, LIP will open new sites in Amsterdam and Hempstead, New York in Fall 2024. In March 2024, the national Suicide Prevention Resource Council included LIP in its Best Practices Registry.
